about

I didn’t want to wake you
so I closed my ears
and crawled into the phone
and down the line
and back to your house.
The lights were out
and the kitchen still
smelled a bit like spaghetti
and extinguished candles,
like coffee and smoke and
perfume.
I crept to your room and into
your bed, that huge
bed.
I swam around under all
those sheets and blankets
until I found you, still
the same,
naked and wet and warm.
Sleeping, purring, whispering.

I didn’t want to wake you
so I closed my eyes
and slipped into your ear
and into your head
and into your soul
and into your dream.
All the lights
were on
and you sat at the table,
legs crossed
and smiling,
waiting
for me to wake you.
